Drawing of Reindeer

Two Reindeer Feeding   Black Chalk and Gouache

22nd October

Artist and Reindeer

No I’m not Santa Claus. These reindeer know all the old jokes as well, so it’s best just to see them as they are - one of nature’s most beautiful creatures on a Scottish hillside.

Artist and reindeer 2

It’s pretty funny when they come up like this and just stand still though...

Baby reindeer

Hello.

Pencil drawing of Reindeer

A larger study worked up from on the spot sketches and photos taken at the time

Baby reindeer 2

Intended as studies for later paintings, these first drawings are detailed but I intend to let them loosen up progressively as I learn more about the forms, stance movement and anatomy of the creatures.

I think there’s good potential here.

Anyone who wants to see the Reindeer - be at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre for 11 o’clock.

Update 19th Sept

Bicycle at dawn Broughty Ferry

Getting in to work early is a bonus. This was the office this morning. If someone could fix the heating it would be appreciated. It seems to go off at night.

Outdoor Painting - Dawn at Tentsmuir

Half way through. The sun’s well up now and the light has completely changed. I’m running on memory now as the sea already belongs to another painting.

Painting of Dawn at Tentsmuir

Completed in the studio from an outdoor sketch from Castle Green, Broughty Ferry

There wasn’t much to do to this sketch indoors. I just had to “bend” some of the colours a bit and sort out a few of the shapes. (More below)

Unthinned oil paint applied directly to acrylic gesso primed canvas without preliminary drawing.

The canvas rests on a board slightly larger than itself. This means you don’t paint your legs.
