This is a studio painting which was scaled up from the small outdoor study which can be seen below. The warm looking sky in this painting was actually a bank of snow clouds with the sun starting to break through.
The painting started with an underpainting in raw sienna laid directly on the canvas with no preliminary drawing. Unusually, the lightlights in the sky were built up first, and the composition is based around this focal point.
