West Beach Littlehampton” is used for the cover of a new book by American author Parker Palmer

West Beach Littlehampton-750x484

Healing the Heart of Democracy” published by Wiley

“Reflecting on the words of Parker J. Palmer in Healing the Heart of Democracy, I am convinced that all of us-as citizens and as elected officials-can learn to bridge the divides that keep us from genuinely respecting one another. In my own reflections on the meaning of democracy, I find encouragement in this inspirational book. Becoming good stewards of our democracy means having a commitment to our collective well-being, rather than each struggling to get his or her own. We must care about the common good, which means working for the many, not just the privileged few. Parker, through sharing his own life's struggles, reveals the common struggles we all endure in life. He also provides us with a way forward-indeed, a way forward with hope”.
Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin

“This is an inspiring book, one that should be read and talked about in every family, book club, classroom, boardroom, congregation and hall of government in our country. Parker J. Palmer writes with clarity, good sense, balance, honesty, humor and humility, focusing on the essence of what is needed from each of us for the survival of our democracy.”
Thomas F. Beech, President Emeritus, the Fetzer Institute

"We have been trying to bridge the great divides in this great country for a long time. In this book, Parker J. Palmer urges us to keep on walking, keep on talking ”just as we did in the civil rights  movement” until we cross those bridges together."
Congressman John Lewis, recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Painting of sky - From Pitcullo Hill, oil painting on canvas

From Pitcullo Hill  8x10ins.  Oil on Canvas                                                                 Sold

Painted initially from quite a long way up a road in Fife that you turn right onto just before you would normally turn left to go to Badger Wood, which isn't its real name but there ARE badgers in it....and trees too...anyway that's where it is. Not in Badger wood but up the hill in the other direction.
I hope this is clear.

When I go to the local recycling depot I don’t usually take stuff out of the skip but the sight of this discarded Merit Chemistry set from the 1960’s lying there was too tempting.

 I can remember mine.

....and also remember being spanked for making stink bombs with it one day when we had visitors.  (Ferrous Sulphate + Tartaric Acid+ a little water then heat gently in the test tube)

The important things in life, we never forget.            Unfortunately, the Ferrous Sulphate was missing from this lovely piece of found art.

The Iron Age Earth House at Ardestie

British Summer Time  (...rhymes with BSE)

Oct 31st

Like most folk in the UK, I grappled feebly with time and my government's success in creating an extra hour of it while we all slept.
There must be a complete secret department that slips into gear weeks  before, to warp time in this way.. physicists, quantum streamers, passwords, bunkers, hidden entrances, armed agents and maybe even  magicians - all so that pigs in Kent can be fed an hour earlier. Or later. I get confused.

Right, I'll go for my bath in "old" time. I wish they'd reset all my clocks while they're busy stretching the fabric of space.
Mind you, they're not so clever as they think.
If they reset the clocks as well ... I wouldn't know what they'd been up to last night, would I?
