A colour study of evening sky and the shore looking towards Monifieth from Broughty Ferry. 10x11ins. Oil on Board

This commission is for another artist who also takes the sky as his subject and I had his own work in mind when I painted it. I knew the colours that I wanted to see in the sky to get the “right” painting- then it was just a case waiting for them to appear ..!

Red and Blue Commission - (Temporary title) 10x12ins. Oil on Canvas

The view from my window for one fleeting moment.

Blue Clouds 20x22ins Oil on Canvas

I’ve seen a lot of wildlife while painting outdoors and often felt that when I’m actually painting outdoors, animals feel less threatened - at least they seem to sense I’m occupied just like they are and often approach much closer than they would otherwise.

However this large male otter really took the prize for sheer boldness a couple of weeks ago.

He suddenly appeared BETWEEN these boats while myself and half a dozen others watched and then just kept appearing and re-appearing here and around the boats for about two hours

He was quite happy to roll on his back while we watched him from about 6 ft above and just .....look back at us. (He had a very intense stare)

A couple of times he climbed out of the water onto some fenders and let me take a picture from immediately above while he cleaned his fur. OK, he swore at me but I just swore back and he seemed to accept this.

A Ship’s OTTER???!
