An initial thickly painted underpainting was applied with a palette knife to establish the “shape” and nature of the underlying light as the structure of the painting and as its central theme. It was developed in stages after this, letting each layer of paint dry before applying the next, sometimes with a brush, sometimes with more thick paint applied with a palette knife, always aiming at each stage to keep a high luminosity.
