This work is painted entirely in transparent oil glazes over a pale raw sienna underpainting and lightened around its main focal point with zinc white. I painted it this way because the original outdoor study had a strange luminosity about it that I didn’t want to lose. The sailing ship was added after seeing the Mexican navy barque “Cuauhtemoc” leaving Dundee and sailing past my studio window while competing in the Tall Ships race.
