Begun with thin opaque layers of oil paint to define first the light, then color and tonal masses. Subsequently built up with thicker translucent color using the palette knife, softened in places with a brush, and even blended with my fingers in bits. My aim in this work was to recreate the strength of light and color in the sky to the eye of the onlooker, partly by using the complementary color retained in the eye as an after image when looking at bright light, as well as the prime color of the light itself.
